What to do... What to do...

Just sitting here at the computer. Again. Trying to keep upbeat. Worried that my left calf muscle has atrophed too much. Worried more that my arms are getting too muscular from all the upper body work and crutch action. Sudoku is fun, but after about 20 or 30 a day, even that is losing its appeal. Work is busy and makes the day go by pretty fast, but I don't want to be there any more than I have to be. Plus my butt hurts from sitting with my leg elevated. Not snacking these days - which is good - but one less thing to keep me busy. I look forward to my recumbant bike/hand cycle/stretching and ab workout each morning - that has been extending beyond my "regular" 90 minute workout when I had use of my leg. Driving is okay, but I don't have anywhere to drive to these days. Can't grocery shop. I could watch more TV but it is so amazingly and frustratingly lame. So, TV is no help. I've read every magazine in the house - some twice. Google news is depressing. Reading cyclocrossworld.com and Robert's blog is fun. But then I really start to miss racing and feeling fit. So, maybe I just sit here a little longer. And maybe have a peppermint patty. Or see if Bill Marut is on FaceBook. I don't know. What to do now...

Here's my $0.02 on muscle atrophy and biking.

I had my right leg in an immobilizer for 12 weeks in 2008 and my quads literally disappeared. I thought cycling would rebuild it, but it didn't really work for me. My left leg just took over, and I didn't even notice.

So after a season back on the bike, my leg wasn't much stronger than it was when I finished rehab.

Lifting and cross country skiing rebuilt it more quickly.

Don't get too discouraged, Julie. You'll be up and riding with a vengence before you know it. Just stay positive and drink your milk :-)
